Warmer weather is on its way, and also all that comes with it – sunny skies, swimming, and of course summer style. This season, I’ve looked to places that are lucky enough to have summer nearly year-round and also those that make the most of it. From the Hawaiian Islands, to California coasts and the Eastern shores of Montauk, the Summer 2017 Collection is inspired by island life and surf style. This fusion of coasts and cultures embodies true summertime spirit – long, lazy beach days, waves crashing on soft sands, and green foliage blowing in ocean breezes. Natural fabrics in traditional tropical to East Coast prep merge effortlessly to capture these timeless summer styles.
After visiting the Hawaiian Islands of Oahu and Maui a little over a year ago, I left with an appreciation of the unique culture and relaxed sensibility we encountered everywhere… it was hard not to just CHILL OUT. Even the more heavily populated and visited city of Honolulu managed to create a sense of calm within the bustle. One of my favorite experiences was taking the “Road to Hana” on the island of Maui (but more on that in another post). Overall, the island life experience is dialed in high here with warm breezes, blue waters, sights of surfers riding the waves, and of course – those iconic and traditional Hawaiian prints.
Southern California has always a reputation for laid back style and living that is also so commonly connected to surfer-types. As a proud 13-year resident of SoCal (not counting my 3 year hiatus in the UK), I’ve definitely fallen prey to the casual lifestyle influence, even if via some elements of easy-going outfits and those classic California-bohemian decor details throughout my home. And while I’ve yet to actually get on a surfboard (yep, still on the bucket list), I’m inspired by beach culture and definitely take note of the differences in style and community when escaping central LA and hanging out over in Venice (yes, there’s totally a difference). I’ve yet to get my hands on an actual copy of the new book Surf Shack // Laid Back Living by the Water by Nina Freudenberger, but based on the images and press I’ve been seeing pop up everywhere, I think I’m not the only one who’s dipping into surf style this season.
As we jump coasts to the East, we look to none other than the ultimate Summer weekend getaway destination of New Yorkers – even beyond the Hamptons – and up to the shores of Montauk. This popular summertime surfing (and all-around general cool hangout) destination is the perfect mix of laid-back beach meets East Coast nautical prep. The Surf Lodge Hotel looks as if it’s been plucked from an exotic Island, then nestled into the Eastern coastline. It is from here that I pull inspiration from soft, sun-washed madras plaids and preppy surfboard stripes.
I’ll be working on the Islands & Oceans accessories collection over the next few weeks, developing designs and hand sewing each item (which will include various pouches and a few feature pieces such as a tote bag and beach wrap). Keep watching my Instagram for updates on the collection progress and date for its launch. Until then, enjoy Spring, and as the weather gets warmer… Summer will be here before we know it!
